West 88, East 47
The talent-laden West girls charged to a 42-25 halftime lead, and blew the game open with a 22-2 run to start the second half for a 64-27 lead. Four girls from the West scored in double figures, led by Owen Valley’s Kaitlin Sweatman with 25 points. Also racking up double-digit point totals were Alex Gasaway from Crawfordsville with 18 points, Olivia Brashear of Washington with 11 points, and Ashley Evans from Hammond Gavit with 10 points.
The East’s Chas Lecher of Greensburg also had a fine game, as her 25 points enabled her to match Sweatman for game-high honors.
Olivia Brashear went three extra rounds to edge Melanie Trammell of Greensburg to capture the 3-point shooting contest, while Alex Gasaway was named MVP.
Alex Gasaway is a five-sport athlete at Crawfordsville, as she competed in soccer and golf in the fall, basketball in winter, and is on the tennis and track teams this spring.
“I really had a lot of fun here today, actually more than I expected,” Gasaway said. “We had a lot of talent on our team and played very well together. We also had great chemistry, which is unusual because we haven’t played together before today and didn’t have many set plays. I’m actually undecided among four schools as my college choice, but I’m leaning toward DePauw and playing basketball there.”
Unlike Gasaway, Kaitlin Sweatman concentrated solely on basketball at Owen Valley and has made her college choice.
“Our team played together really well today, Sweatman said. “It was a lot of fun. We probably could have won a state championship with this team. I’m going to the University of Missouri at St. Louis in the fall and play basketball. It’s in Division II.”
